Road safety, especially as a pedestrian. The only way to cross a road is to literally cut drivers off, even when you have the right of way. If you manage to get into the driver’s path (often they’ll swerve and speed up to try and cut you off before you can get in front of them), they’ll keep moving towards you until their bumpers are less than a foot from you. Stop lights are suggestions. Lanes might as well not exist.

Air pollution. No matter what you wear on your face, after a few days breathing Shanghai air, you’ll feel like you’ve got a frog stuck in the back of your throat and you’ll start coughing up all kinds of nasty things.

Water sanitation. It’s more of an inconvenience, but I think it’s a real problem that tap water is undrinkable.

Petty cultural differences:

Spitting. At first it was funny to see 80-year-old Chinese women hauk massive loogs. That doesn’t last long. It’s a gross sound, and it’s unsanitary.

随地吐痰。一开始看到一个80岁的中国老女人咳出大量的痰（ hauk massive loogs 字典查不到，根据文意大概翻译的）觉得蛮有趣的。不过这持续不了多久，因为它很大声，而且很不卫生。

Gawking. This one only applies because I’m unique-looking by Chinese standards, but at least 4 out of every 5 people I pass on the street look right into my face with a sort of unaware, transfixed gaze, not malevolent by any means but certainly not pleasant. I have a newfound sympathy for celebrities and zoo animals.

盯视。这一点只是因为按照中国标准我看起来是很特别的，经过街道时每5个人中至少有4个目瞪口呆的看着我的脸，没有任何恶意的但确实很不舒服，我对名人和动物园里的动物产生了新的同情。

Loud talking. Why?

Personal space. Most are okay, but it’s not uncommon for a Chinese to get right up in your face, less than half a foot away, while talking.

Rushing/getting in the way. Drivers cutting off pedestrians applies to other pedestrians as well. People will stand right outside an elevator or subway door and try to get on as quickly as possible before you can get off. They’ll also run right across your path or into you to board a train that isn’t leaving for another 20 seconds. Why?

冲撞/阻拦道路。司机打断了行人也适用于其他行人。人们会直接站在电梯或地铁门后，然后在你下车之前尽可能的赶紧上车。他们会跑过你旁边的道路或挤撞你去搭乘一辆不是在20秒内离开的火车。为什么？

Honking. A symptom of the road safety problem. In most countries, honk means “Look out!” and is followed by deceleration. In China, honk (or more often, HOOOONNNK, HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK HOOONNNNK) means “Get out of the way!” and is often followed by acceleration into heavy traffic. Trying to cross a street? HOOOONK! Walking on the sidewalk? HOOOOONK! No reason in particular? HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO . . .

鸣笛。道路安全问题的一个征兆。在大多数国家，鸣笛意思是“当心！”紧随其后的是减速。在中国，鸣笛（或更多的，鸣笛哔哔哔哔哔哔哔）意味着“让开！”往往紧随其后的是加速并造成交通拥堵。试图过马路吗?哔哔哔 ！走在人行道上?哔哔哔 !没有特别的理由? 哔哔哔哔哔哔哔。。。

Line cutting. Chinese people either don’t know what lines are, or think that I think they don’t know what lines are and are taking advantage of me. It drives me crazy.

插队。中国人甚至不知道什么叫排队，或者是认为我以为他们不知道什么叫排队并欺负我。我要疯。

In China, I have been welcomed, humbled, amazed, impressed, embarrassed, bewildered, disgusted, overjoyed, shocked, afraid, calm, appreciative, frustrated and overwhelmed. I cannot say enough good things about Chinese people but here are some of my anecdotes about my less desirable experiences as a Westerner:

Being confronted with the squatty potty for the first time after a few too many rice wine shots on evening I arrived. I was not ready for that at all.

Table manners: all the slurping, burping, smoking, messy eating that goes on in Chinese canteens.

Car horns: it seems appropriate to use your car horn or bicycle bell every 10-20 seconds and for no apparent reason. Just to let people know you are there.

Trying to cross a busy road in Beijing is quite an undertaking and you could be waiting for some time.

Lack of accessibility: if you are a wheelchair user, you will not find China particularly accommodating on the whole. Expect difficulties.

Watching a woman get her head stuck between the doors of a tightly packed moving metro train.

When market traders shouted out to me "Hey White Lady, we have XXL size just for you" (I'm a UK Small). None of the clothes in high street shops fitted me at all.

Distressing the host when I manage to finish all the food.

当我设法吃掉所有的食物时，主人看起来很苦恼。

Having soup at the end of a main course? That's back-to-front!

Restaurants serving turtles. One minute you see them swimming in the tank, the next you see them on the plate. Very distressing!

The transition to Chinese cuisine and savoury breakfasts never really worked. Too much oil or spice made me ill. As did the sight of ducks heads, chicken feet, etc.

Being refused by taxis for requesting too short journeys. But how else would I know where I'm going? I can't read the signs!

Trying to keep up with the pace of drinking and speeches at formal dinners for 4 weeks in a row. Great fun but glory be...it requires some stamina.

So many people...everywhere! Especially the long queues at tourist attractions. The sticky, humid atmosphere that was ever present in the summer didn't help either.

好多人。。。无处不在！特别是在旅游景点的长队。夏天存在的黏黏的、潮湿的空气也没有什么用。

Censorship. I don't get it.

审查制度，我不明白。

Being stared at wasn't really a problem, but when I sat down on a wall for a rest and a family plonked their baby right on my lap for a photo, I did feel like quite the spectacle. Pepole trying to take discreet photos was a source of much amusement though.

被盯着并不是一个问题。但是当我靠着墙边坐下休息时，一个家庭将他们的小孩放在我腿上拍照时，我觉得很奇怪。虽然人们试图小心的拍照片是很多消遣的来源。

In conclusion, I love China and Chinese people!

Don’t get me wrong. I love China, and there are many good things I can say about the country but there are things too that shocked me when I first visited.

I was there for a total of four months and these are the things I did not understand and was not happy about:

Taxis - At the airport, I did not speak a word of Chinese but there I was looking around at the taxi stand wondering where the queue is. Mind you, it was 12 midnight, so a young Chinese Man approached me and asked me in English if I was looking for taxi. To my relief, that time I thought it was, I said yes and followed him. It was half my fault too because I was tired and all I wanted was to get to my hotel. I did not even bother to try Uber because the internet was not working well. So to cut things short, this Taxi guy overcharged me and asked for 260RMB. Before I left, my friend told me taxis from airport to our hotel was only 40RMB. Anyway after a big disagreement. We settled at 100RMB, but that was my first rip off. Well, lesson learned, never again was I overcharged.

的士——在机场，我不会讲中文，但我在的士车站环顾四周寻找排队的地方，请注意，这是在午夜12点，一个年轻中国男子靠近我并用英语问我是否在等的士。我松了一口气，那时我以为是这样的，我说是的，然后跟着他。这一半是我的错因为那时我很累，我只想到我的酒店去。我甚至没有尝试着使用Uber因为网络不是很好。所以简单的说，这个的士佬多收我费用并要求260元。在我下车前，我朋友告诉我的士从机场到我住的酒店只要40元。不管怎样，在一次大的分歧以后，我们将价格定在100元，但这是我第一次被宰。好吧，教训，之后我再也没有多付费过。



Internet - As for me who uses social media a lot for work, internet is very important. So one thing I did not enjoy too is the very slow internet in China and the connection to VPN that doesn’t work half of the time. It took me months to figure out which VPN subscription works better.

网络——对于我这个需要使用网络做很多工作的人来说，网络是非常重要的。 所以我不喜欢的一件事是中国网速很慢以及大半时间VPN的连接没啥用。我花了几个月才找出哪些VPN的效果更好。



Toilets - I can count in my fingers the times that I found a clean toilet especially in public places. The malls have the clean toilets and some big airpots like Shenzhen International.

Pollution – Lastly, there is just too much pollution. I can count the times I have seen a clear blue sky. I strongly believe the country needs to address this matter.

Other than that, I truly enjoyed China. It is a very beautiful country and the countryside is very scenic. The people are very nice and the culture is very rich.

I am looking forward to another trip towards the end of the year.

I felt obligated to answer this one because I’ve received a significant amount of hatred from another answer where apparently I’m a China “fanboy.”

Lack of Personal Space

People in the big cities, particularly Shanghai, just have no sense of personal space. For an introvert like myself, this can cause quite a bit of frustration. I don’t want to be shoulder to shoulder with people (though in most cases it was their shoulder and my ribs or arms depending on how packed the subway was). Introverts beware. This was much less of a factor in Zhuhai on my most recent visit, so it may just be an issue in Shanghai and Xian (though most likely Beijing as well).

大城市的人，特别是上海，没有私人空间感。对于像我这样的内向人，这可能会引起相当多的挫折。我不想跟其他人肩碰肩（虽然大多情况下都是他们的肩膀碰到我的肋骨或者手臂，这取决与地铁人满的情况）内向的人要小心。我最近去的珠海这样的情况比较少，但在上海和西安可能是个问题（虽然最有可能的是北京）。

Us Vs Them Mentality

我们VS他们心态

Living in China with an American Chinese girlfriend to translate can really open your eyes to the negative or dim view some people take of foreigners. Obviously that’s not just a China thing, but I go out of my way to be nice to people, so it was particularly hurtful to hear that taxi drivers, scam artists, and other assorted scumbags saw me as nothing more than a foreign piggy bank to break open. More disconcerting, they would attempt to draw my girlfriend into the scheme to work against me (which of course she told me). Certainly I had friends in China, but if you’re just visiting, and particularly in tourist areas, you’re much more likely to run into Chinese with a very nasty view of foreigners than you are to make friends.

与美籍中国女朋友生活在中国真的可以让你了解到一些人对外国人的负面或阴暗的看法。显然这不只是中国的一件事情，但我在外面对人都是很好的，所以当听到那些的士司机，骗子艺术家，各种杂七杂八的卑鄙小人只不过把我看做是一个被打碎的外国小猪储钱罐时，真的很伤人。更令人不安的是，他们会试图将我的女朋友卷入计划来反对我（当然是她告诉我的）。当然我在中国有朋友，但如果你只是来参观，尤其是在旅游景点，你很有可能遇到拥有非常讨厌外国人想法的中国人，而不是交朋友。

It’s the Laowai’s Fault

这是老外的错

In Shanghai they used the term Laowai (not sure on the spelling) to refer to foreigners. There were some interesting connotations that came with it, but on the whole, in any incident, accident, or scuffle, it was always the laowai’s fault. A friend of a friend was driving her bike down the street through a green light. A taxi turned the corner through a red light sharply, and went into the bike lane and hit her. She was not badly hurt, so when the police came, they went to the police station to “resolve” the issue. They reviewed the tape, they all saw the taxi roll straight through a red and go far too far to the right and hit her on the bike… The police pointed at her and said, “your fault.” She had to pay for the scratches on the taxi before they would let her leave. Us vs them, even with the police.

在上海，他们使用“老外”一词（不确定拼写）来指外国人。它有一些有趣的内涵，但总的来说，在任何事件，意外或争斗中，它总是老外的错。一个朋友的朋友在街上骑着单车通过绿灯，一辆的士在红灯时急转弯，驶入自行车道并撞到了她。她伤的不严重，所以当警察来的时候，他们一起去到警察局“解决”问题。他们查看了录像带，都看到了的士直接闯红灯，向右走得太远，撞到了自行车上的她。。。警察指着她并说，“你的错”。她不得不在他们同意让她离开之前支付的士上的划痕。我们和他们，即使有警察。

The Great Firewall - Shitty Internet

防火墙——糟糕的网络

At the time I was living in Shanghai, I was one of the first areas to get fiber optic cable in my apartment so I could have blazing fast… 40mb downloads… Whee… Unfortunately, it only applied if you were looking at stuff in China. So it was great for looking at Youku, when it didn’t mysteriously slow down as they presumably scanned your connection and tracked your data… But it flat out didn’t work at all for youtube, google, facebook, etc. All blocked 100% of the time. The only way to access American sites was to use a VPN, and even then, they would occasionally crackdown on VPNs and cut off their IPs from getting through the firewall. Fun times… Since all my work pretty much requires the internet, doing anything in China took nearly 8 times as long as it would in any other country that didn’t have a “great” firewall.

我住在上海的时候，我是第一个在我公寓装光钎网络的，这样我就有非常快的。。。40兆的网速。。。呵。。。。不幸的是，它只适用于你浏览中国的东西。所以看优酷时是很棒的，它没有神秘的变慢因为他们可能在扫描你的连接器和跟踪你的数据。。。但是，当你使用youtube，谷歌，脸书等它完全没有用。100%会被阻止。访问美国网站的唯一方法是使用VPN，即使是这样，他们偶尔也会打击VPN，并阻止他们的IP通过防火墙。有趣。。。由于我的工作大都需要网络，在中国做任何事情都比在其他没有防火墙的国家要多花费近8倍的时间。

Bacteria and Unclean Food

细菌和不干净的食物

You can’t drink the tap water, that’s a known… If you ever go to China, do not drink the tap water. You will hate life… All life. But even if you don’t drink the tap water, you are going to get food poisoning and it’s going to be very unpleasant. While I was in China I got food poisoning at least 4 times a year. In one case I got giardia (which is extremely unpleasant), and that means at some point, some a-hole chef took a shit and did not wash their hands before touching my food. Improperly stored meats was common, but moreover, just general uncleanliness was rife throughout even mid-tier restaurants. I will say that on my last visit to Zhuhai I didn’t have any troubles because I knew what to look for, but I was only there for 2 months… 1 month shy of my scheduled bacterial poisoning. ;p

你不能喝自来水,这个是知道的…如果你去中国,不要喝自来水。你会恨生活。。。所有生活。但即使你不喝自来水，你也会食物中毒，这将是非常不愉快的。当我在中国时，我每年至少有4次食物中毒。有一次我得了贾第虫（这真的非常讨厌），这就意味着在某些时刻，一些讨厌的厨师拉完屎然后在碰到我食物之前没有洗手。不恰当的储存肉类是常见的。而且，甚至是一些中等餐厅也是普遍的不干净。我会说上次我去珠海我没遇到任何问题，因为我知道要找什么，但我在那只待了2个月。。。距离我预定的细菌中毒时间表还少1个月。；P

Mei Yo - Don’t Have - Fuck Off

没有——没有——滚开

By contrast with my 2 weeks in Japan, China may have been the most unfriendly place I’ve ever lived. Everyone had a case of Bitchy Resting Face or Asshole Resting Face.

与我在日本的两个星期相反，中国可能是我曾经住过的最不友好的地方。每个人都是一副暴躁的脸或是讨厌的脸。



It was very common my first few months there to try and get help from locals, only to be shrugged off or told “mei yo.” Which means “don’t have” but seems to be used as a general “fuck off I don’t want to deal with you” phrase. I mean no one wanted to deal with me. No one… Pull out a map, “I need to fi*” MEI YO MEI YO! Arrrgh! Maybe I’m just that annoying…

这在我头几个月尝试从当地人那得到帮助时很常见。他们只是耸耸肩或告诉你“没有”。但似乎也通常用作“滚开我不想理你”，我想没有人想要理我。没有人。。。打开一张地图，“我需要找。。”  没有没有！啊啊！或许我只是讨人厌。。。

No Respect for the Queue

不尊重排队

They don’t do lines in China. Oh sure, it looks like a line. It may even occasionally behave like a line, but just when you think you’re getting to the front of it, boom, someone walks in through the front door and slides right in front of you and starts ordering. Like you’re a freaking transparent ghost. When I told people about it in Sweden, they were horrified.

在中国他们不排队。噢好吧，那看起来像排队。它甚至偶尔表现得像是一条队伍，但是当你认为你拍在前面时，嘭，有人从前门走进来，然后直接的走到你前面并开始下单。就好像你是个该死的透明的幽灵，当我在瑞典跟人们讲起时，他们都吓坏了。

General Lack of Care for Others

普遍缺乏关心他人

I’m not saying that all Chinese are self-absorbed, but when it comes to day to day interactions in Shanghai, don’t ever expect someone to hold a door for you or make space for you so you can get on a train or elevator. No one is going to help you if you drop something or need a taxi cab. Just don’t expect any of those little common courtesies you may have gotten used to in the west. If it happens, treasure it, because it’s just that rare.

我不是说所有中国人都是自私的，但是谈及在上海的日常互动，永远不要指望有人会帮你开下门或帮你腾个地方这样你就能坐上火车或电梯。当你掉了些东西或需要一辆的士时没有人会帮你。不要指望那些你在西方已经习惯了的日常小礼仪。如果有，珍惜它，因为那是非常罕见的。

Animal Cruelty

The keychains are beyond the pale, but I haven’t seen that personally. I did see how dogs were treated before they were slaughtered and turned into stew. Enough said I think… But if you want to feel really crappy for the rest of the day, there’s this…

Things are improving in China all the time. Every time I visit it’s just a bit better, but there is a general lack of empathy from the Chinese for people outside their own families. That, I think, is always what bothered me the most in China.

中国的事情一直在改善。每次我访问时都会好一点点，但是对于自己家庭以外的人，中国人一般缺乏同情。 我想，这是在中国最让我困扰的。

I live there since almost 6 years now, I am fine with everything except the rudeness of people driving cars, I would never understand how can people be so disrespectful of their fellow pedestrians, I still can’t figure out why people would behave like this.

我住在那里大约6年了，我对每件事都觉得可以除了开车的人的粗鲁。我永远不明白人们怎么会如此不尊重他们的行人，我仍然弄不清楚为什么人们会有这样行为 。

Crowds are manageable if you use street smarts and avoid going out when everyone is going out (morning 9 AM, lunch time, etc.), just chose a different schedule and you will never feel crowded in big Chinese cities since everyone mostly are working class people wih fixed working hours.

拥挤是可控的只要你聪明的使用街道，避免在所有人外出时（早上9点，午餐时间等）外出，选择一个不同的时间表，那你就永远不会在中国的大城市里感到拥挤，因为大多数人都是固定时间的上班族。

The rest is great.

其他的都很好。
