Obviously this requires some generalising but what are some cool things you’ve noticed about Chinese people that seem to be shared cultural values/traits even if it doesn’t apply universally to everyone?
(Dedicated to Feifei Wang who once commented on the dearth of these kind of questions.)

It feels great! Very comparable to a Japanese shinkansen train (which I’ve also ridden).
My ride on a Chinese bullet train was from Beijing to Taishan in Shandong province. So about a four-hour car drive I think?
Got there in 30 minutes in complete comfort.
The other high-speed Chinese train I’ve ridden is the famous Shanghai-to-airport maglev train. That was the fastest train I’ve ever ridden in. The 5 to 10 minutes went by really quickly.
What TRULY impressed me though were the not China’s high speed trains but the trains poor migrant workers use in China.
I wanted to travel cheap (on a student budget) and I wanted to go to Hong Kong from Beijing. But I didn’t want to fly since I had done that a lot already and it’s a bad way to see a country since you’re literally thousands of feet removed from it. I figured why not try out my Chinese skills and ride a train by myself from Beijing to Hong Kong?
I forget how I bought the ticket but I managed to. I think I did it online and a Chinese-speaking friend helped me. Then I went to the train station by myself. EVERYTHING was in Chinese. But I managed to read directions without asking people for help (my spoken Chinese is almost non-existent).

In a massive atrium filled with hundreds of people waiting for their trains I think was the only non-Chinese person. I looked around in vain for a Western face but could find none. Exciting!
Then I boarded the train—and I was shocked. It was a million times better than I expected. I honestly thought it was going to be very barebones and basic like the trains for working people in Thailand and Egypt (both of which I’ve ridden) or what I’ve seen in pictures of Indian trains. What I found was the complete opposite. This train was advanced and had very comfortable compartments chairs the works. This train was way WAY better than some of the commuter or travel trains they have in America for middle-class people. And this was economy class—the cheapest of the cheap tickets you could get so only poor Chinese people were riding. Now I understood why the Chinese Communist Party has legitimacy among the common people—because of this stuff! Amazing!

I made a friend on the 24-hour train—I could not speak a word to him but we wrote in Chinese characters on a notebook. He invited me to eat the duck he was sharing with his friends. It was a memorable experience.
I arrived in Shenzhen starving (didn’t know that I could order food from passing food vendors on the train) and bade a quick good-bye to the friendly man so I could find food.
Then I crossed the border between China and Hong Kong. That was an interesting experience too. But this 24-hour train trip remains one of my more cherished memories of my few months in China.

Oh it is amazing!!
I have on two occasions opted to take the high speed train between Shenzhen and Beijing along with various shorter trips to and from Shenzhen.
Now some of you may ask “What sort of crazy bastard takes a train halfway across the country that’s going to take you a day to complete?” This crazy bastard that knows what he is doing that’s who!!
Here are my reasons:
1、Price competitiveness: I can get a first class seat on a train at a similar price to an economy flight (about 1400RMB) so I figure that’s worth it straight away.
2、Time factor: This is one of the big ones. Anyone who has flown domestically in China has to remember that something approximating 70% of Chinese airspace is reserved for the military leaving about 30% for everybody else. This means that there are chronic delays and cancellations. Let’s not talk about the weather problems that might prevent your flight from taking off at all (smog fog or snow in Beijing typhoon or rain storms in Shenzhen). On the other hand the high speed trains are BRUTALLY on time - you miss your train by a minute and you can watch it pull away.
Also think about how long you have to wait around. I calculated that my total commute (including getting from my home to the train station and where I needed to wind up in Beijing) from Shenzhen to Beijing was going to be about 10.5 hours. It would take me one hour to get to the airport in Shenzhen then the 2 hour wait in the airport (3 hours) then 3.5 hours in the air (6.5 hours) then another hour in the airport on the other side (7.5 hours) plus at least another hour to get to where I would normally need to go on the other side of Beijing by metro (8.5 hours). This assumes that there are no delays AT ALL (extremely unlikely) so the difference is almost negligble.

3、Comfort: We all know what planes are like for comfort but the trains are very comfortable as other answer-ers have said. The first class carriages are even better - the last time I took a long distance high speed train (Beijing to Shenzhen about 8 hours) I plugged a power board into the plug so I could keep my devices charged as well as allowing the guy sitting next to me to charge his iPhone.
4、View: Yes you do get a much better view of the world whipping by at up to 315 kilometres an hour. Sure sometimes you’re going through tunnels but that just comes with the territory.
5、Beds: With the introduction of overnight sleeper trains between Shenzhen/Guangzhou and Beijing/Shanghai you can get a soft sleeper from north to south or vice versa at about 1200RMB. This means that people don’t have to book a flight AND a hotel room and these trains have proved to be exceptionally popular booking out early.
So the high speed trains are freaking awesome… I highly recommend it and I am absolutely looking forward to the introduction of the Shenzhen to Kowloon HSR that will cut my trip time to Hong Kong down to 15 minutes!!

I take the Chinese bullet train on a regular basis usually traveling from Shanghai Hongqiao to Nanjing South and back mostly on 1st class ( company covers the bills ).
I do not mind taking the 2nd class seat which already is very generous and comfortable. Actually a 2nd class seat on a Chinese bullet train has much more leg rooms than that of the Economy Comfort/Premium class that an airliner has to offer.
However the seats are not as comfortable as their European counterparts say the French TGV or its licensed Korean version the KTX or the ICE from Deutsche Bahn. The seat configuration for 2nd class on European high-speed trains is 2+2 comparing to China’s 2+3 the seats in Europe are considerably wider.
( image above : 2nd class on a Chinese High Speed Train )
A 1st class wagon has a seat configuration of 2+2 totaling four seats on a roll. The seats are therefore wider and also thicker feel more solid. They are usually covered by red fabrics.

You do need to bear in mind that a lot Chinese people talk rather loudly especially when talking on the phone. And they do not have the slightest conscience that this can be disturbing to others. It can be very stressful for people who are not accustomed to this culture.

High speed train is the best way to travel in China.
1- Train stations are located in the inner city. So you do not need to travel long distance to get to the station unlike airports.
2- You do not need to arrive at the train station hours before it departs.
3- The ride is very comfortable. You can walk on the train. Lots of toilets. Cafeteria on the train for meals and drinks.
4- You bring as many bags you can carry.
5- For short distances train is faster then taking an airplane.
My only disappointment with the train system is lacks the ability to connect all stations to enable you reach every destination. Unlike the airplane booking system that will book seats on different planes to get from A to X to reach your destination the Chinese system is not developed enough to do this online.

Comfort is not too bad although compared with french tgv or German iec the quality of the seat are not as good and comfortable. Chinese high speed train are for me a cheap version of the foreign one. I wait to see how they will get old after 10-15 years.

Very smooth. You don’t notice the acceleration or deceleration at all. No bumps no sudden movements. Seats are spacious and comfortable. Clean interior. People are quiet and respectful. That was my experience on the high speed train from Shanghai to Hangzhou last year.

Better than a local flight not nearly as romantic as steam engines. Smooth but crowded and the food isn’t designed for Western stomachs. Big plus: contrary to airlines small to no risk of delays.
