Both female and male expats rarely wanna stay in China more than one year or two they both wanna leave that place asap.

I'd also like to see stats comparing m/f ratios of expat communities throughout the world. I suspect that you'd find a higher proportion of female expats in countries with relatively less sexism and discrimination (I'm guessing Northern Europe possibly Germany and France) countries that afford more opportunities to women in the workplace and countries with better healthcare systems. Regardless of "women holding up half the sky" China is still hugely sexist and there seem to be less opportunities for women.

That's interesting I went to China with a company that sorted TESOL gigs (temporary) in a variety of different countries from central & south America Africa and Asia. The percentage of women involved on a yearly basis was 75% meaning only 25% male. However China was the only country where males made up the majority. Is there any source you have for that 20%?

The problem with some of these explanations is that theyre trying to identify a factor that accounts for a difference between male and female expats decisions to come and stay however the common reason "less opportunities at home " is applicable to both. If fewer opportunities are why people come here then youd expect a spread thats much less exaggerated. Actually Im gonna say that the amount of male expats here is not indicitive that more of them come here but that more choose to stay here. (In my experience there are plenty of new females that come to China more than the 80-20 dynamic anyway)

Because they are mostly people who are doing very well career wise and financially in their home countries who has decided to enrich their lives by adventuring out of their comfort zone and immersing themselves in the society and culture of China. And of course they mostly have satisfying and meaningful long term relationships from their home country and has absolutely no need to find a 3rd tier foetus soup eating girl to marry and then go to reddit to complain about.

Woman are hardwired to be cautious.(there's always exceptions) Cautiousness increases their reproductive success. If you think we are going to overcome our biological imperative with 50 years of feminism you are wildly deluded. I should add I don't care if woman go out into the world and conquer. Good for them. Do it all.

Agree with all of those but I'm guessing retention is a big part of it too. I've known lots of women that come here for one contract have a lower tolerance level for a lot of the fuckery that goes on in China and thus go home after the one contract. A man is a little more likely to stay for longer due to a gf or just to give it another go in a new workplace after they get fucked by their first employer.

Just curious...is there some sort of statistic you can lix to that prompted this question? Are you sure there are more male expats than female? I'm a woman about to move to China to teach English so I'm intrigued.

I'll level with you on this one I don't actually have the hard statistics for it in my experience I found that the majority of people in the expat community (at least out in the country side where I lived) were male. Though in places like Shanghai I found that there were more female expats even then a lot of them were tourists. Doing a Google search I see the figure is 70% male but that's from a super unreliable source so... Though thanks for input I actually hadn't considered that my experience wasn't typical

I would say it's a combination of yellow fever + women not being as adventurous wanting to be closer to family + women beating men at education and thus having better opportunities at home
For those who are adventurous and are looking for an affordable urban experience maybe China just isn't on their radar. They hear China and think ugh no I'm anticommunism and I want to be safe!

It is hard to land an expat contract these days. It is not about having fewer opportunities at home that might only be true for English teachers and not real expats.
