A great power refuses to play by international rules declining to ratify a major U.N. convention to which more than 160 other countries are party. After years of complaints the nation convinces the U.N. to tweak the treaty to many of its specification.

In 1982 after around a decade of wrangling the U.N. hammered out a frxwork to guide global maritime affairs and ensure freedom of navigation. Called the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS) the treaty covers everything from the rules of maritime commerce to the ways in which resource-rich seabeds can be divvied up between nations. In certain cases international courts like the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague can rule in maritime disputes.

The US does not need China to manufacture anything. Next respond to any Chinese military provocation forcefully and put an end to this Chinese nonsense. Since China has had some cash to throw around China thinks it can have impunity with its my way or the highway diplomacy. No way. Unless China wants to repeat history China better stop throwing a tantrum whenever it doesn't get what it desires.

In the present situation you have never bothered to respect your small neighbors' rights to the same sea. So we disrespect you right back. As for respect or disrespect for the U.S. you are but a dog to the U.S. So all that mighty country has to do to stop you from stealing the whole sea from the other claimants is to drive you back with a stick. you don't dare stand up to the U.S. All you are good at is pushing your small neighbors around and grabbing their territory.

Take heed in understanding her words as one might say she's politically inclined to be in favor of China. Willingly or unwillingly writing this article (after all it is China where news are "filtered" and monitored and/or censored so to speak) all of us must take this with a grain of salt.

This article is bogus with a faulty premise and conclusion.It doesn't so much matter whether the US is a signatory to UNCLOS or not.The PRC is and it is the PRC's behavior that is the issue here.The US is not a claimant in this dispute.It's only interest is to keep the SCS open like it has for over 70 years which is a good thing. Without the US military muscle the PCA ruling would have no enforcement.The SCS is part of the Western Pacific and is larger than the Gulf of Mexico.There is no legal precedent for such a body of water to be a territorial sea.The PRC needs to RESPECT the treaty it signed and international law.

Oh course this article is written by a leftist that wants the UN to rule the world.I couldn't care less what China does in the South China Sea.I do hope that Trump is elected and that he can renegotiate some of our trade deals with China.Other than that I have no problem with China and I fail to see why any American should.As for the UN I would like to see it abolished and that expensive real estate in New York where it's headquarters is housed put to a productive use.

Hague court is chaired by Little Japanese Chief Judge who did not recuse himself given China-Japan island dispute. Worst still this Little Japanese even violated UNCLOS' own law by accepting Unilateral lawsuit which itself violated Asean_China's DOC agreement signed in 2003.

If china thinks that UNCLOS predates their preposterous claim then they should have not ratified the treaty. The point here is they are just cherry picking they will abide by the UNCLOS when it is favorable to them. What a hypocrite!!!!!

The issue of the US not ratifying the UNCLOS has nothing to do with case brought by the Philippines in the International Court as a result of territorial grabbing by china. The Philippines and china are both signatories to the UNCLOS thereby they are bound to respect the provisions of the treaty. It is just an excuse by china to disrespect the United Nations and a blatant disregard of the international law.

Totally different situation between US and China. Though the US Senate won't step up the President and the armed forces abide by UNCLOS rules. And work with it as they can. China completely disavows UNCLOS as having any authority at all.

I said boycott China. Their claim is totally ridiculous. They are the bully of the south china sea they are bulling other small asian countries. Nothing but a rogue nation. The US operates per international law. Other countries should join in as well otherwise China will take over the entire china sea and make it hell for everybody to travel in that region.
