Matt Damon has hit back at accusations of that he has participated in “whitewashing” through his involvement in forthcoming historical epic The Great Wall a large-scale Hollywood-Chinese co-production.

Speaking to the Associated Press while promoting the film in Beijing Damon said: “The whole idea of whitewashing I take that very seriously ... it’s a monster movie and it’s a historical fantasy and I didn’t take a role away from a Chinese actor. It wasn’t altered because of me in any way.”

Directed by Chinese film-maker Zhang Yimou (who was responsible for the Beijing Olympics opening and closing ceremonies) and the first film to emerge from the Chinese arm of Dark Knight Rises studio Legendary (now owned by Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda) The Great Wall is a fantasy action movie set in China’s mythical past in which a multinational band of mercenaries and fighters battle supernatural monsters. After the trailer release in July much criticism was directed at the choice of Damon as lead instead of a Chinese actor.

This is a Chinese film made by a Chinese company with a Chinese director. They have decided to have a big name American star to increase their sales. Presumibly the people complaining know better than actual Chinese people how they should make their film? Or perhaps they want "foreign" films to stay in the art house instead of competing againts Hollywood? If Chinese culture is going to compete against Hollywood it needs a foot in the door. Matt Damon is that foot in the door. The people complaining basically don't want Chinese culture to compete. Globalisation should apparently only mean Chinese factory workers making consumer goods at low prices a one way street.

There is some sort of racism going on here but I'm not sure it is of the kind described. The old Western colonialist mentality lingers on in many alleged liberals (not to say all left-liberals or even most but in many of the most vocal for sure) it's just heavily disguised.

This is a Chinese movie which will be exported to America not an American movie and they wanted an American to put on US regional promotional material to help sell tickets to an American audience. Promotional material in other areas actually play down Damon's presence in the movie.

Damon is correct. No one is forcing the Chinese to put a white guy in therehe's in it because they want him in it. I watch a number of Chinese moviesand I see them in no rush to have anyone but Chinese actors in any of their filmsabsolutely zero in the way of melting potgood luck trying to find a black actor in their moviesthere is no obligation on their part whatsoever.

its been a feature of Hollywood movies recently to have a crappy soft-power Chinese element to them. Either a rubbish actor or ridiculous product placement or reference to China.
You watch it and spot it then as expected in the credits is some form of Chinese investor.
Its a bit tragic.

That accusation is another form of racism - it's part of actor's art to play one who is not himself. 
Moreover every big budget film is a. commercial enterprise and has to have due returns.

Chinese films often feature monsters. I saw one the other day on cable the Chinese woman played a Japanese high school girl. That is not whitewashing but it is something. There were loads of monsters which the ChineseJapanese woman killed. I was wondering why I was watching it!

It is bizarre but then again I remember Morgan Freeman popping up in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and since it has become compulsory for the Men in Tights to have a black sidekick......'cos England was always multicultural or something!! Lol.
Oh and have you seen the Thor films? Heimdall is played by Idris Elba! But Idris is cooland Gods don't actually exist. So that's OK then.
