Suicide in South Korea is a serious and widespread problem, with the country having the second-highest suicide rate in the world according to the World Health Organization, as well as the highest suicide rate for an OECD member state.

But do we ever stop to think about why that's the case? As far as I've witnessed, very few people do.

I think it's time that we altogether as nation reflect back upon what is seriously wrong and actively seek to figure out what steps to take and changes to make to improve our mental well-being and personal/national happiness.

Absolute truth! When i get treated in a disrespectful way, i starts to speak English faster with them. Then, all of sudden they treat me with more respect. Haha. Sad to see this problem all over the world. English is a language, it doesn't necessarily measures an individual knowledge or wisdom.

I find really brave the fact that you adress all these topics that you feel that are unjust in your country. Unfortunately, many of the things that you mentioned, are problems that exist in other countries too. It is really important to accept the fact that these are real problems and find a way to deal with them. Covering these problems or pretending they don't exist, won't change anything. We should speak about them in order to change them. Props to you for the way you expressed your opposition to these phenomena.

I am Korean. I disagree. I have lived in Western countries, but I am much happier living in Korea. It is just your opinion. Don't generalize Koreans.

Hell josen is a word written on sites where people loathe Korea. If Korea is Hell It is hard to find a country that is not hell. Those people are in every country.Other countries are similar. Korea is a very good country and a livable country. Such a place is quite rare. Even a person who speaks English well and can not speak Korean can suffer bad things.

地狱朝鲜是一些人在厌韩网站上用的词语。如果韩国是地狱，那就很难找到一个不是地狱的国家了。那些人在每个国家都有。其他国家也类似。韩国非常好，也是个宜居国家。这样的地方相当少。即使是一个英语讲得好但不会讲韩语的人也会遇到糟糕的事。

South Korea is less racist than the West. I have never seen a crime committed by racial hatred in Korea. Korea has one of the lowest crime rates. The high rate of suicide in Korea is due to the elderly. Young people's suicide rates low. Korea's part-time pay is a high country, similar to Japan. There are so many good bosses in korea. The rankings of happiness are far removed from reality, and happiness is relatively high in poorer and dangerous countries. If a child living in Korea lives in a poor and dangerous country, he will feel miserable and want a come to Korea.

韩国的种族主义比西方少。我在韩国从来没见过因种族仇恨而犯下的罪行。韩国是犯罪率最低的国家之一。韩国自杀率高是因为老年人。年轻人的自杀率很低。韩国的兼职薪酬很高，跟日本差不多。韩国有好多好老板。幸福排名跟现实脱节太多，相对贫穷危险的国家来说，韩国的幸福感很高了。如果一个生活在韩国的孩子去到一个贫穷危险的国家生活，他会感到悲惨，并且想回到韩国。

Thanks for the video, Vicky. I lived in Korea for four years and I really felt like Koreans were mean to each other. It seemed like people would do anything necessary, including lie or place blame on others, in order to have a good image and save face. It was sad because even good people did this as a part of every day life.

It is normal for all humans to try and protect themselves so things like taking responsibility and honesty have to be taught. Eventually I learned to work within the frame of dishonesty and appearances but I did not like it. I wish kindness and honesty were as rewarded in Korea as image and status.

Life is about more than how much money you have or how nice your home is. To the people angry about this video saying that because Korea is not a poor country, it's not so bad, listen to her words. She is not talking about the monetary status of Korean life. She is talking about the quality of the interactions between people. Being talked down to and disrespected is something you have to get used to there. I'm not saying Koreans aren't kind people, either. There are a lot of kind Koreans, but things that would be considered abuse in other countries are really common and even considered cultural necessities in Korea.

I'm American, and my friends/family talk often and in depth about the problems in our country. Refusal to do so is just blind nationalism and it will not help you or your fellow country people. "This happens in other countries too!" is not an excuse. I'll bet that the people in those other countries are talking about their problems and trying to fix them, so why aren't you?

Honestly the fact that so many people are responding saying that "at least we aren't poor" or "there are poor people in Canada" are really missing the point... and kind of proving the point of her video at the same time.

One of the most humble and honest Koreans I've met willing to address one of the uglier issues in modern society that stems from that group herd mentality of bullying and control. This kind of fear driven interaction is what those people concerned refer to as the hell driven environment. It's not everywhere in Korea, but it is pervasive on different levels and more prominent in different work environments in Korea. They don't have the same approach as the west, and teaching,fostering personal expression, seeking individual creativity is not the teaching path used by most schools. Good on you Vicky for speaking out.

Yeah, what are you discussing in this video is the bitter truth about dependency of one's treatment towards another person regarding his particular skills, in your case English. I face this issue all the time at college, this is like pre-established notion, like if smb speaks good English others just have to treat him another way ( the same goes for good marks).
