BEIJING: China has recorded its first quarterly current account deficit in nearly 17 years, ending its dream run of accumulating trade surplus as a top exporter for a period during which it amassed the world's largest foreign exchange reserves of over $3.14 trillion.

北京：17年来，中国首次出现季度经常账户赤字，结束了其作为顶级出口国累积贸易顺差的梦想。在过去17年期间，中国积累了超过3.14万亿美元的全球最大外汇储备。

China saw a current account deficit of $28.2 billion in the first quarter of this year, the country's first quarterly deficit since the second quarter of 2001, data released on Friday by the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) showed.

国家外汇管理局上周五公布的数据显示，今年第一季度，中国的经常账户赤字达到了282亿美元，这是自2001年第二季度以来首次出现季度赤字。

The goods trade still ran a surplus of $53.4 billion, but registered a 35 per cent slump year-on-year, while the service trade posted a deficit of $ 76.2 billion, the biggest quarterly deficit since 1998, China's Caixin magazine reported.

中国财新杂志报道，商品贸易顺差仍为534亿美元，但同比下降35%，而服务贸易逆差为762亿美元，为1998年以来最大的单季度逆差。

SAFE tried to play it down saying that the rare red figure in the current account was a result of "seasonal factors", but economists said it could signal a fundamental shift in China's international payment position, which in turn is a result of global economic rebalance in the last decade.

外管局试图轻描淡写，称经常账户中罕见的赤字是“季节性因素”的结果，但经济学家表示，这可能标志着中国国际收支状况发生根本性转变，而这是过去10年全球经济再平衡的结果。

For China, the dip in its current account could not have come at a worst time as it is engaged in crucial trade talks with the US to meet the demands of President Donald Trump to reduce America's $375 billion bilateral trade deficit immediately by $100 billion and $200 billion by 2020.

对中国来说，目前正值跟美国进行贸易谈判的关键时刻，美国特朗普总统要求现在立即将美国3750亿美金的贸易逆差降低1000亿，倒2020年降低2000亿，经常账户还未到最糟糕的境地。

The current account surplus was the pride of China for the last 17 years as it emerged as the world's factory with enormous amount of exports to all nooks and corners of the world. In the process, it accumulated at one time over $4 trillion in foreign exchange reserves, unprecedented in the world.

China has the biggest holding in US government debt amounting to $ 1.19 trillion last year. In March this year its foreign exchange reserves stood at over $ 3.14 trillion.

I hope this is not fake news. If real this is a good thing as it means that people across the world are now recognising the low quality of Chinese goods and services. India is not much into export of goods but we are top notch in services and this is good news as China can equalise its current account surplus against India by importing more services from us.
